LeDor is a photo-based artist whose work focuses on the roles and expectations of women in contemporary popular culture. The scenes and characters are based on life experiences of the artist and friends, people who navigate life as outcasts due to their sexuality and/or gender diversion. In their most recent series, Presumably Malevolent, popular cinema is targeted for its lack of representation of female villains. Despite lacking queer and female representation, popular cinema is a massive influence on youth and how they navigate the world. In this series LeDor criticizes the normative representation of women’s roles, and rejects such definitions by presenting re-constructed queer archetypes; thus politicizing the construction of the female performance through portraiture.

PRESS

For Alleged Moral Ambiguity: In their series of diptychs, LeDor engages with the word "whore" to confront the way gendered terminology is sytematically employed to degrade women and strip them of their social and political power. This word is especially significant because of its historical context as a term used in anti-sex work discourse and slut-shaming. While the first image of every pair shows a woman somehow on display and labeled by the word "whore," the second image shows the woman claiming agency over her pose and her sexuality, subverting the term and reclaiming it in an act of empowerment and nonviolent rebellion. Each diptych reflects on a different group or institution that opresses women, from the criminal justice system to the fashion industry, underscoring the insidious nature of institutionalized sexism.
